Planetary transits and your birth chart

A transit (Gochara) is the current movement of the planets through the zodiac. Reading transits against your birth chart shows which houses and planets are being activated now. This page brings together the coming Peyarchi dates, your Sade Sati status and a transit view of your own chart.

How transits are read

Transits are counted from the Moon sign (Chandra Lagna) in the classical Gochara system and, by many astrologers, from the Lagna too. Each planet gives results according to the house it transits, modified by Vedha, another planet transiting a specific house that obstructs the result. Ashtakavarga points refine this further: a planet transiting a sign with many Bindus tends to give better results.

Transits and Dasha together

A transit works through the promise of the birth chart and the running Dasha. A strong Jupiter transit gives most when Jupiter's Dasha or a related period is running. That is why two people with the same Moon sign can have very different experiences of the same Peyarchi.

Fast and slow planets

Fast planets, the Moon, Sun, Mercury and Venus, affect days and weeks. Mars affects a month or two. Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu shape whole years. Use the Peyarchi list for the slow planets and the Live sky view for today's positions.

Double transit

Many astrologers look for a double transit: Jupiter and Saturn both aspecting or occupying the same house. Major events such as marriage or a new job often coincide with a double transit on the relevant house, supported by the Dasha.

Planet speeds and stations

Each planet's speed changes through the year. When a planet slows down to turn retrograde or direct, it is said to be stationary, and many astrologers consider its effect strongest around those dates. Mercury turns retrograde about three times a year, Venus and Mars less often, and Jupiter and Saturn once a year for several months. The transit timeline marks these stations so you can see when a planet's influence on a house is most concentrated.

Read your transits

  1. Add birth details. So transits are placed in your houses.
  2. Check the slow planets. See Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu first.
  3. Check Sade Sati. See whether Saturn is near your Moon sign.
  4. Open the analysis. Read the detailed transit analysis for your chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is Gochara?

The classical Sanskrit term for planetary transits read from the Moon sign.

Should transits be read from the Moon or the Lagna?

Classical Gochara uses the Moon sign; many astrologers check both.

What is Vedha?

An obstruction: a planet in a specific house that cancels or reduces another planet's transit result.

How does Ashtakavarga help with transits?

Signs with more Bindus give better results when a planet passes through them.

What is a double transit?

Jupiter and Saturn influencing the same house at once, often linked with major events.

Why do transits feel different for people with the same sign?

Because the birth chart and Dasha periods differ.

How long does a Jupiter transit last?

About a year per sign.

How long does a Saturn transit last?

About two and a half years per sign.

What is Sade Sati?

Saturn's transit over the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon, lasting about seven and a half years.

Can transits predict exact dates?

They show windows of time. Exact timing also depends on the Dasha and the chart.

Can I see transits for a future date?

Yes. Choose any date to see the positions then.

Is there a detailed transit analysis?

Yes. Transit analysis reads each factor against your chart in detail.

Do transits change my birth chart?

No. The birth chart is fixed for life. Transits are read against it to see which parts of the chart are being activated at a given time.
