The Jyotisha library: planets, signs, houses and stars

The knowledge library explains the building blocks of Vedic astrology one topic at a time. Each entry gives the classical meaning, the sources it comes from, how it shows in a chart, and links to the tools that use it.

Planets

The nine Grahas are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Each entry covers the planet's nature, the signs it rules, its exaltation and debilitation, its friends and enemies, its Dasha length, its deity and its traditional remedies. The Sun, for example, rules Simha, is exalted at 10 degrees of Mesha, runs a Dasha of six years and is worshipped as Surya with the Aditya Hridayam.

Signs

The twelve Rasis each have an element, a mode, a ruling planet and a body part in the Kalapurusha, the cosmic person. Mesha is the head, Rishabha the face, Mithuna the arms and so on to Meena, the feet.

Houses

The twelve Bhavas cover all areas of life: self, family and speech, courage, home and mother, children and intellect, health and service, marriage, longevity, fortune and Dharma, career, gains and expenditure. Each entry explains the house, its natural significator and how its lord is read.

Nakshatras

The twenty-seven lunar mansions each span 13 degrees 20 minutes. Their entries give the lord, deity, symbol, Gana, Yoni, Nadi and the Padas, with the qualities of people born under each.

Yogas

Yogas are planetary combinations with named results. Gaja Kesari forms when Jupiter is in a Kendra from the Moon; Budha Aditya when the Sun and Mercury are together; the five Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is in its own or exalted sign in a Kendra.

Sources

Entries cite Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Brihat Jataka, Phaladeepika, Saravali and Jataka Parijata, with chapter references where possible.

Using the library

Search for any term, or follow links from your own chart, where every planet, sign and house is linked to its entry.

Dignity and relationships

Each planet entry also explains dignity: the signs where a planet is exalted, in its Moolatrikona, in its own sign, in a friend's or enemy's sign, and debilitated. Exaltation gives a planet its fullest strength, debilitation its weakest, and the texts describe ways a debilitated planet can be lifted, called Neecha Bhanga. The natural friendships between planets, such as the Sun with the Moon, Mars and Jupiter, or Saturn with Mercury and Venus, are shown in a simple table.
