Planet sign changes
Peyarchi is the Tamil word for a planet's change of sign (transit). The big ones: Guru Peyarchi (Jupiter), Sani Peyarchi (Saturn) and Rahu-Ketu Peyarchi: shape the year for every Rasi. This page lists the coming sign changes for each planet, with the dates, the direction of motion and what each change means for your Moon sign.
The Moon changes sign every two and a half days and the Sun every month, but Jupiter stays in a sign for about a year, Saturn for about two and a half years, and Rahu and Ketu for about eighteen months. Their transits set the background for long stretches of time, which is why temples and almanacs announce Guru and Sani Peyarchi in advance.
A transit is read by counting the house it falls in from your Moon sign. Jupiter is traditionally favourable in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th; Saturn in the 3rd, 6th and 11th; Rahu and Ketu in the 3rd, 6th and 11th. Vedha (obstruction) from other planets can modify the result, and your own Dasha decides how strongly you feel it.
Outer planets regularly appear to move backwards (Vakra). A retrograde planet can return to the previous sign before moving forward again, so one Peyarchi can have more than one date. The list marks retrograde and direct stations as well as sign entries.
Tamil almanacs following the Vakya system can give Peyarchi dates that differ from modern Drik calculations by days or even weeks for Saturn and Jupiter. Temples often follow Vakya. Choose your calendar school so the dates match the one you follow.
Each Peyarchi is marked with special pujas at the Navagraha temples of Tamil Nadu: Alangudi for Jupiter, Thirunallar for Saturn, and Thirunageswaram and Keezhaperumpallam for Rahu and Ketu. Devotees whose Moon sign is about to receive a challenging transit often visit before the date, and those receiving a favourable one visit to give thanks. Many families also plan weddings, house purchases and new ventures to begin after a favourable Guru Peyarchi for the people involved.
Jupiter's change of sign, about once a year. It is seen as one of the most important transits for prosperity, marriage and children.
Saturn's change of sign, about every two and a half years. It begins or ends Sade Sati, Ashtama Shani and Kantaka Shani for different signs.
The shift of the lunar nodes, about every eighteen months. Rahu and Ketu always move backwards through the zodiac.
Vakya and Drik calculation methods give different dates. Choose the school you follow.
