About Thaipusam
Thaipusam is celebrated on the day of the Pushya (Poosam) Nakshatra in the Tamil month of Thai, usually on or near the full Moon. It honours Lord Murugan, who received the Vel (spear) from Goddess Parvati on this day.
How Thaipusam is observed
Devotees fast, carry Kavadi and pots of milk to Murugan temples, especially Palani and the Arupadai Veedu shrines, and in Malaysia and Singapore at Batu Caves and Tank Road. The festival is a time of vows and gratitude.
Devotion to Murugan
Thaipusam falls in the Tamil month of Thai when the Moon is in Pushya, and honours the day Parvati gave Murugan the vel, his divine spear. Devotees fast for days, carry kavadi or milk pots to Murugan temples such as Palani and Thiruchendur, and chant his names along the way. Many families also offer milk abhishekam at a local temple.

Why festival dates can differ by city
Most Hindu festivals are tied to a Tithi or Nakshatra that must be present at a particular time of day, such as sunrise, midday or midnight. Because local sunrise varies across India, a festival can fall on different calendar days in different cities. Regional calendars (solar or lunar, Amanta or Purnimanta) can also shift the observance, so follow your family or temple tradition when they differ.
