About Puthandu (Tamil New Year)

Puthandu, the Tamil New Year, begins when the Sun enters Mesha (Aries), the first day of the month of Chithirai, usually on 14 April. Homes are decorated with kolam and families read the new year’s Panchangam.

How Puthandu is celebrated

The day begins by viewing auspicious items such as fruits, gold and a mirror, followed by a meal that includes Maanga Pachadi, combining sweet, sour, bitter and spicy tastes to symbolise the year ahead. Temples hold special pujas and the Panchanga Sravanam reading.

Puthandu morning

On the eve, a tray of fruits, flowers, jewels, a mirror and coins is arranged, and the family views it first thing in the morning, the kani, so that the year begins with auspicious sights. Homes are cleaned, kolams drawn, and a meal with all six tastes, including mango pachadi with neem and jaggery, reminds the family that life holds sweet and bitter together.

Why festival dates can differ by city

Most Hindu festivals are tied to a Tithi or Nakshatra that must be present at a particular time of day, such as sunrise, midday or midnight. Because local sunrise varies across India, a festival can fall on different calendar days in different cities. Regional calendars (solar or lunar, Amanta or Purnimanta) can also shift the observance, so follow your family or temple tradition when they differ.
