About Pongal
Pongal, or Thai Pongal, is the Tamil harvest festival celebrated when the Sun enters Makara (Capricorn) in the Tamil month of Thai. Families boil new rice with milk and jaggery until it overflows, a sign of abundance, and offer it to the Sun.
The four days of Pongal
Bhogi, the first day, clears old things away. Thai Pongal, the main day, honours the Sun. Mattu Pongal honours cattle, and Kaanum Pongal is a day for visiting family. The festival marks the start of Uttarayana, the Sun’s northward journey.
Pongal in the home
On Thai Pongal day the new rice is cooked with milk and jaggery in a clay pot in the courtyard, facing the rising Sun. When the milk boils over, the family calls out Pongalo Pongal, a sign of abundance for the year. Kolam patterns are drawn at the doorway, sugarcane and turmeric plants are tied to the pot, and the first portion is offered to Surya.

Why festival dates can differ by city
Most Hindu festivals are tied to a Tithi or Nakshatra that must be present at a particular time of day, such as sunrise, midday or midnight. Because local sunrise varies across India, a festival can fall on different calendar days in different cities. Regional calendars (solar or lunar, Amanta or Purnimanta) can also shift the observance, so follow your family or temple tradition when they differ.
