About Avani Avittam
Avani Avittam is the annual ceremony in which men who wear the sacred thread renew it, usually on the full Moon of the Tamil month of Avani, close to Shravana Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.
The ritual
The day includes Kamopakarma japa, offerings to the sages and the wearing of a new Yajnopavitam. The following day many observe Gayatri Japam, reciting the Gayatri mantra 1,008 times.
Who observes it and how
Avani Avittam is kept by families of the Yajur Veda tradition on the Shravana full Moon, and Rig Veda families observe it on the Shravana star. After a purifying bath, men change their sacred thread with Vedic mantras, offer Tarpanam to the rishis and recite the Kamo Karsheet japa. The next day Gayatri japa is chanted a thousand and eight times.

Why festival dates can differ by city
Most Hindu festivals are tied to a Tithi or Nakshatra that must be present at a particular time of day, such as sunrise, midday or midnight. Because local sunrise varies across India, a festival can fall on different calendar days in different cities. Regional calendars (solar or lunar, Amanta or Purnimanta) can also shift the observance, so follow your family or temple tradition when they differ.
