Dosha guide
Kala Sarpa Dosha
Kala Sarpa Dosha describes a chart in which all seven visible planets fall on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis, hemmed between the two nodes. It is a later, popular rule rather than one found in the oldest classical texts, and its strength is debated. When it is present, the reading is usually that life moves in surges and stalls, with results arriving late but often strongly.

How it is formed
Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other. If the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all occupy the houses from Rahu to Ketu (or from Ketu to Rahu) without any planet stepping outside, the pattern is called Kala Sarpa. Twelve named varieties, from Ananta to Sheshnag, are described according to which houses the nodes occupy. If even one planet is outside the axis, many astrologers call it a partial pattern or do not count it at all.
What it is said to indicate
The nodes are karmic points: Rahu shows hunger and new experience, Ketu shows detachment and past skill. With every planet between them, the chart is said to be pulled strongly by the node story, so effort may feel blocked until a turning point, often around the Rahu or Ketu Dasha or a nodal return around ages 18–19, 36–38 and 54–56. Many successful people have this pattern, which is why careful astrologers avoid fear-based readings of it.
Assessment and remedies
Before reading it as a Dosha, check whether any planet is conjunct a node within a few degrees, whether Jupiter aspects the nodes and how strong the Ascendant lord is. Traditional remedies include Kala Sarpa shanti at Trimbakeshwar or Srikalahasti, Naga worship on Nag Panchami and recitation of the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra.
A Dosha is a flag, not a sentence
Classical texts mark certain combinations as Doshas because they can strain a life area. Most have cancellation rules, and their effect depends on the strength of the planets involved and the periods you run. Read a Dosha as a reason to look more closely at the chart, not as a verdict.
Common questions
Is Kala Sarpa Dosha serious?
It depends on the strength of the planets involved, the cancellations present and the periods you run. Many charts carry a mild form that gives little trouble.
How do I check for Kala Sarpa Dosha in my chart?
Cast a free birth chart; the Dosha section checks the classical conditions and cancellations automatically.
Can Kala Sarpa Dosha be cancelled?
Classical texts list cancellation conditions. The detail sections on this page describe them, and your chart report checks them.
Do remedies remove Kala Sarpa Dosha?
Traditional remedies such as prayer, charity and mantra are meant to support you through the period; they are not a guarantee and should never replace practical care.
Is Kala Sarpa Dosha mentioned in classical texts?
It does not appear by this name in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra or Saravali. It became prominent in later regional practice, which is one reason astrologers disagree about its strength.
Does Kala Sarpa Dosha stop marriage or career?
It is not read as a prohibition. At most it suggests delays followed by progress. The 7th and 10th houses, their lords and the running Dasha matter far more.
What is a partial Kala Sarpa?
When one planet sits outside the Rahu–Ketu arc, or exactly on a node, some astrologers call the pattern partial and treat it as weak or absent.
When are its effects said to peak?
Usually during Rahu or Ketu Dasha and their sub-periods, and around the nodal returns at roughly ages 18, 37 and 56.
