Mercury in Sagittarius: what it shows
Mercury's intellect and speech take on the manner of the sign it occupies. Sagittarius is a dual fire sign of Jupiter, principled, optimistic and fond of learning. Here the graha stays in a neutral sign, neither helped nor hindered, so the house and aspects decide much.
How comfortable Mercury is in Sagittarius

The nature of Sagittarius
Sagittarius is a Fire sign of Dual (Dvisvabhava) nature, ruled by Jupiter. Mercury placed here takes on that element's temperament and that ruler's priorities.
Mercury and the Fire element
Mercury in a fire sign gives a quick, bold and persuasive intellect. The rishis made Mercury the prince of the planets, youthful and clever, and fire adds wit and confidence of speech. Decisions are made fast and expressed with conviction. Teaching, sales, writing with a strong voice and public speaking suit this placement, and the classical caution is to listen as quickly as one speaks.
How Sagittarius shapes the pace of Mercury
Sagittarius is a dual sign, dwiswabhava Rashi, which the tradition links to learning, adaptability and two paths at once. Mercury here is flexible and resourceful, able to see both sides. Results often come through skill and versatility, and the native does well where variety is welcome.
Mercury as a guest of Jupiter
Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, which is neutral toward Mercury in Parashara's scheme of planetary friendship. The tradition reads this as a guest in a polite home: results come according to the planet's own strength and the rest of the chart.
Reading a planet by sign
The sign shows how a planet expresses itself: its style, tastes and comfort. The house it occupies shows where in life that style is used, and the aspects and conjunctions it receives show who and what it works with. A planet's dignity (exalted, own sign, friendly, neutral, enemy or debilitated) tells you how easily it delivers its natural significations. Positions on these pages use the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri Ayanamsa.

The table on this page shows that house for each of the twelve Ascendants with a short reading, so you can see how one sign placement plays out in different charts.
