The nature of Capricorn
Capricorn is a Earth sign of Movable (Chara) nature, ruled by Saturn. Mercury placed here takes on that element's temperament and that ruler's priorities.
Mercury and the Earth element
Mercury in an earth sign gives a practical, careful and detailed mind. Calculation, accounts, crafts, trade and any skill that rewards precision come naturally. Tradition links Mercury to commerce and earth to what can be measured, so this placement often prospers through methodical work. Its native learns by doing and remembers what the hands have learned.
How Capricorn shapes the pace of Mercury
Capricorn is a movable sign, chara Rashi, which the tradition links to beginnings, travel and change. Mercury here acts on its themes quickly and likes fresh starts. Results tend to come through initiative rather than waiting, and the native is often happiest when a new project is under way.
Mercury as a guest of Saturn
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, which is neutral toward Mercury in Parashara's scheme of planetary friendship. The tradition reads this as a guest in a polite home: results come according to the planet's own strength and the rest of the chart.
Reading a planet by sign
The sign shows how a planet expresses itself: its style, tastes and comfort. The house it occupies shows where in life that style is used, and the aspects and conjunctions it receives show who and what it works with. A planet's dignity (exalted, own sign, friendly, neutral, enemy or debilitated) tells you how easily it delivers its natural significations. Positions on these pages use the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri Ayanamsa.
Why your Ascendant changes the reading
The same placement lands in a different house for every rising sign. The table on this page shows that house for each of the twelve Ascendants with a short reading, so you can see how one sign placement plays out in different charts. For the complete picture, including conjunctions, aspects, Navamsa and the current Dasha, cast a full birth chart.
